This name and style refers to the actual pattern found on the curtain rather than the shape or material. Gingham is a checked pattern that covers the whole panel – think of the traditional plastic picnic table cloths that people use! These days they can be made of synthetic materials although they traditionally are manufactured out of woven cotton.
Although they can be found all sorts of colours, some of the most popular ones are red, blue or pink. Red is often found in the kitchen whilst pink is associated with girls’ bedrooms and blue with boys’.
Like all curtains, they are available as readymade, but with more research and investment you can also acquire made to measure versions – especially important if your windows have weird or disproportional dimensions! You can embellish them by adding different colours or patterns in the shape of panels or linings along the edges. You might want to consider using a different coloured gingham curtain in each room of your house. Alternatively you can mix and match and use different styles in different rooms, giving each one a different theme.
Due to the unmistakable pattern, gingham curtains are very good at bringing life to an otherwise plain room. They are perhaps not the best choice for a room that already has a myriad of patterns within rugs, carpets, wallpapar and suchlike. They are also good at giving a traditional and ‘homely’ feel to the room.
In terms of price, this style usually ranges from around £20 to as much as £150, or the equivalent in your currency. The mid-price would be around £60. The more expensive ones may be due to their extra length, but also because they have extra features such as being woven cotton (rather than synthetic) and also being lined in white cotton and pleats. Extra features do tend to involve extra costs!
